The Georgian Football Federation has announced the departure of Frenchman Willy Sagnol as head coach of the Georgian national team following the defeat to Northern Ireland by a goal to nil in the team's opening match of the UEFA Nations League.
Willy Sagnol has been in charge of Georgia since February 2021, and he has guided the national team to a historic achievement by qualifying for the UEFA European Championship for the first time, reaching the Round of 16 in the 2024 edition.
The decision to leave came after the defeat against Northern Ireland in Tbilisi, in a match where Khvicha Kvaratskhelia missed a penalty, before Shea Charles scored the winning goal for the visitors in the 9th minute of stoppage time.
Sagnol will replace Georgian coach Ramaz Svanadze, the former head coach of the Georgia U21 national team, with a contract running until the end of 2028. He is set to lead the national team in their upcoming match against Ukraine.
