Milan Sefilár, the goalkeeper for AS Roma, finds himself in a strange situation in his international career, as he currently has no national team to represent, despite his impressive performances with his club.
Sefilar was born in Belgium and represented its national team at various age levels before choosing to represent Serbia at the senior level.
In September 2021, Svilar played for 45 minutes with Serbia during the victory over Qatar, which ended in a four-goal haul, and he was 22 years old at the time.
After his participation with the Serbia national team, his international status is now subject to the regulations regarding changes of sporting allegiance set by FIFA.
Later, the Roma goalkeeper wanted to return to represent Belgium, but he was unable to do so due to FIFA's rules regarding changing national teams, which impose restrictions on players who have played international matches for the senior team after turning 21. In March 2024, Belgium's coach at the time clarified that Svilar could not legally change his federation.
Meanwhile, Sefilar is no longer in Serbia's plans after rejecting a call-up for 2024, finding himself stuck between the two national teams: Belgium cannot call him up, and Serbia is not summoning him.
Despite legal attempts to address his situation, FIFA regulations still prevent the goalkeeper from changing his affiliation, as he continues to shine at club level without international participation.
