Mexican Javier Aguirre has taken over as Valencia's head coach in an attempt to save the team from a difficult start in LaLiga, having collected only 4 points from the first 7 matches, during which they achieved just one victory, placing them 19th in the standings.
Javier Aguirre, 67 years old, returns to LaLiga after previous experiences with CA Osasuna, Atlético, Real Zaragoza, RCD Espanyol Barcelona, Leganés, and Real Mallorca, where he gained widespread fame for his ability to lead teams through difficult circumstances.
Javier Aguirre had been without a club since leading Mexico in the FIFA World Cup 2026, before signing with Valencia until the end of the current season, with an option to extend the contract for an additional season if the team qualifies for the UEFA Europa League through the league. However, sporting director Braulio Vázquez confirmed that European qualification is not the only condition for the extension, stating: "We could finish in fourteenth or fifteenth place, and we would renew Aguirre's contract because we would be satisfied with his work."
During his official presentation at the Mestalla Stadium, Aguirre revealed that he rejected four offers before agreeing to manage Valencia, stating that he could not turn down the Spanish club. He said: "I cannot say no to Valencia. Never, ever. It is a historic club in the league, and it has wonderful fans. When you arrive here, you feel amazed. I want Mestalla to be an imposing stadium, and for the team to return to the place it deserves, which it has held throughout its history."
The Mexican coach added, revealing details of his conversation with his wife before making the decision: "I was with my family, with my wife Silvia and my grandchildren, and I told her: Silvia, I'm sorry, but we have to go there."
Aguirre is set to benefit from the international break to work with his players, with his first match against Valencia scheduled in two weeks against Racing Santander at the Estadio El Sardinero.
