Borussia Dortmund have reached an agreement with their coach Niko Kovač to extend his contract until the summer of 2029, according to the newspaper "Bild". Only the official procedures and signing of the new contract remain.
Niko Kovač's current contract with Borussia Dortmund was set to run until June 30, 2027, before both parties agreed to extend it for an additional two years. This move came after the club extended the contracts of several officials, including CEO Carsten Kramer, sporting director Lars Ricken, and financial director Thomas Treich.
Niko Kovač took over as manager of Borussia Dortmund in January 2025, at a time when the team was experiencing a sporting crisis, having lost four consecutive official matches under Nuri Şahin. The Croatian coach managed to guide the team from 11th place to 4th by the end of the season, securing a spot in the UEFA Champions League.
Last season, Niko Kovač guided Borussia Dortmund to second place in the Bundesliga, while the team is enjoying a strong start to the current season, sitting at the top of the Bundesliga table unbeaten after four rounds with 12 points, two points ahead of Bayern Munich.
Borussia Dortmund are keen to keep Niko Kovač as part of their strategy to maintain administrative and technical stability, given the strong relationship between the coach, Lars Ricken, and the new sporting director, Ömer Toprak. The club hopes that this continuity will translate into trophy wins, after the team's results have clearly improved under Kovač's leadership.
